A nice short resident evil inspired horror game.

I don't really remember how long ago nightmare of decay came into my radar, but I know it had been sitting on my steam library for around two years. This game is yet another exapmle of the ps1 looking horror game trend, which i am happy I was able to predict ever since the pixel art trend of the 2010's, hoping for elder zoomers (such as myself) to start making videogames that look like what they grew up with. Nightmare of Decay is nothing special or groundbreaking and i do not expect it to be, I simply expect a competent example of resident evil-like game design and some spooky low-poly zombies and it delivered just that. The game is short, by the time i finished it steam had recorded that i had been playing for only 4 hours (this includes that one time i started it and didn't go past the first room) while playing on the highest difficulty avaliable on the first run. The game plays fast and lose with the plot as it's purpose is to set the stage for some classic resident evil flair that blends, due to it's first person perspective classic resi design with the remake's gunplay which admitedly can trivialize some of the survival of the survival horror at times. This being said, i never felt neither overpowered nor underpowered for long stretches of time, the developer(s) really hit the spot with how many resources they gave the player at a given time, at least on the hardest difficulty, the game could use being a bit harder and being more stingy with the resources it gives the player. I am quite desensitised to horror in videogames (as long as it not jumpscares, those fuck me up) but this game has only one effective scare on me, which is the guy holding the woman's head, the low poly model smiling at the camera is kinda off-putting but nothing that i would say "ay dios mio que miedo", but then again that is one more scare than classic resi has gotten on me. All the weapons in this game are balanced and follow the same rules of "stop, wait for crossair to close, shoot, rinse and repeat" and are the usual suspects: pistol, shotgun, magnum, knife along some other goodies which either are only in the extra modes or my dumbass did not find. Enemies are also the usual suspects: zombie, spider, zombie dog. but also to spice the variety up they have cultists with guns that look like they came out of blood, faster zombies that in gameplay act like the hunters from resident evil. You could never have a resident evil wiwtyhout some puzzles to solve, the ones in this game, truth be told are a bit lacking, but in all honesty that was never the part i liked about resident evil so for me it was not a big deal for the puzzles to be a bit lacking although I would have appreciated at least one that would have me questioning at any point whhat to do. Musically this game is pretty basic and the audio design follows suit, i kinda wish this was not the case since good audio design can make any game a nightmare (of decay) so this is the only aspect in which i find the game could use some *real* improvement, but like all the other lacking aspects of this game it is not poor to an experience-breaking degree, not by a longshot. Overal i would recommend everyone who itches for some resident evil to pick up and have a good evening with nightmare of decay,it is very cheap and will cost less than the couple of beers you can havewhile playing this game.
